Why does battery life get worse over time?
I’m sure you’ve noticed that you see a noticeable difference in how well arlo camera battery holds a charge after a year or so. Have you ever wondered why it got worse? I don’t want to talk about parasitic reactions, electrolyte, electrodes blablabla. Let me talk the conclusion directly.
There are basically two main factors that speed up the inevitable death of your battery:
- High temperatures
- Increased time spent at high voltages (i.e. high charge level)
What should we do?
- To make your battery last as long as possible, you should try to charge at lower rates, which keeps the battery cooler and happier. A longer charge each night is much better than supercharging over lunch each day.
- Lithium ion chemistry prefers partial discharge to deep discharge, so it’s best to avoid taking the battery all the way down to zero. Since lithium-ion chemistry does not have a “memory”, you do not harm the battery pack with a partial discharge. If the voltage of a lithium-ion cell drops below a certain level, it’s ruined.
